Safe Campuses
In an effort to keep our schools safe and free of drugs and weapons, several programs have been implemented by Campus Police.
Information
Students, staff and visitors are well-informed about laws and rules in regard to drugs and weapons. Posters appear on all entrances to every building in the Putnam City School District. They are very specific in regards to the possession of weapons on school property, citing the Oklahoma State statute. (Title 21-1280.1) It also lists the different types of weapons as defined in the statutes. (Title 21-1272)
Large metal signs are placed near the main entrances of all our schools. They state that Putnam City Schools has no tolerance for weapons, drugs and violence at our schools. The signs also list the phone numbers for Campus Police and the secret witness hotline.
High School Amnesty Box
In order to continue the effort to keep weapons and illegal contraband out of our schools, "amnesty boxes" have been placed at the main student entrances of our three high schools. These boxes are similar to small safes with a one-way drop slot opening in the front. In the event students bring weapons or illegal contraband to school, they may drop it in the amnesty box with no questions asked.
The boxes are checked weekly by Campus Police officers, and all items found in them are booked into our police property room.
Secret Witness Hotline
In 1993 Campus Police installed a "secret witness hotline." The hotline is functional 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for students to call and report any criminal activity, violation of school policy or other incident that occurred or might occur on campus. The number is posted on every entrance door at all schools and is included in the student handbooks. The information obtained from the hotline is used by Campus Police and school administrators to help keep students and staff safe.
