The primary responsibility of the school nurse is to strengthen the educational process by protecting, maintaining and promoting the health of students and staff. To do this, the schools of Putnam City are staffed with 13 Registered Nurses and 18 Health Aides. Their daily responsibilities include providing basic first aid, emergency first aid, administering medications and treatments, and monitoring immunizations records for compliance with state laws.
Our Health Aides staff the clinics in most elementary schools on a part-time basis. They are kept busy during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All of the Health Aides are certified in CPR and First Aid through the American Red Cross. They also have taken a medication administration training course. To supervise the Health Aides, there are two Registered Nurses available at all times to answer questions and respond to emergencies. These nurses visit the clinics on a weekly basis or more often as needed.
The middle schools, the high schools and two elementary schools are each staffed with one full-time Registered School Nurse. In addition to their other responsibilities, our nurses are continuously involved in health counseling, health assessments, health screenings, health referrals, crises intervention, wellness screenings, health education, and emergency first aid assessments for their own schools and their feeder elementary schools.
