New Sewing Machines and Cabinets for Putnam City West High School
The ablity to sew or knowledge of sewing is important in scores of careers in fields of design, fashion promotion, apparel production, textile production, fashion services and fashhion merchandising. Putnam City West’s classroom set of sewing machines is the same set that was in the school when in opened in 1968, almost 40 years ago. The machines are outdated and parts are difficult to find when machines break down after decades of use.
New sewing machines are much more advanced, versatile and easy to use, and would allow students to work with technology current in the field. Advantages of new machines include:
- A greater variety of stitches. Some new machines offer 37 stitches while machines currently in use at the school have only a straight and zigzag stitch.
- New machines will sew up to eight layers of denim while machines currently in use struggle and jam with a double layer.
- Top-loading bobbins in new machines mean easier loading and less tangling of thread. They also allow students to do reverse bobbin work with decorative threads which takes a top-loading bobbin thread.
- New machines have one-step automatic button holes.
- Many of the new machines are computerized with time-saving features.
